Low in fat, full of vitamins and minerals, and packed with powerful antioxidants, beetroot is a brilliant food. It’s an excellent source of folic acid, fibre, manganese and potassium. Beetroot fibre increases white blood cell numbers and is one of the richest sources of glutamine, an amino acid vital for health and maintenance of the intestinal tract. It’s also rich in nitrates, which are essential for proper blood flow and nutrient delivery – important for any athlete.

Providing vitamins C, E and a variety of Bs, it’s no wonder parsnips are veggie superstars. One of the most plentiful ones of the B vitamins is folate. Folate manufactures genetic material within the body and allows for proper cell division. It also contributes to proper blood flow.

Because of their fibre content, they are good for your digestive system. And the list of health benefits doesn’t stop there – parsnips have plenty of vitamin K, good for absorbing calcium and protecting bones.

Were you told as a child, “Carrots help you see in the dark”? It’s not far from the truth. The vitamin A in carrots can help prevent vision loss. Carrots are also packed with antioxidants, compounds that inhibit oxidation – a process that can damage cells.

Carrots contain fibre and potassium. Upping your potassium levels while reducing sodium can help lower blood pressure. And then there’s the vitamin C, which boosts immune function. Carrot allergies are rare, making them tummy-friendly for most people.

Antioxidants, fibre, beta-carotene and vitamin K: rhubarb has them all. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that can neutralise free radicals in the body, preventing healthy cells from mutating or dying. Vitamin K is useful for bone health because it improves calcium
absorption, preventing bone loss.

Ginger stimulates sweat production, giving you a double cleansing whammy if you consume it during exercise. The root is known for its anti-nausea qualities, useful for anyone who suffers from motion sickness or is in the early months of pregnancy. Ginger root also contains potassium, magnesium and vitamin C, making it a natural choice for a healthy diet.

Star Anise

Star anise has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It’s thought to have microbial properties, which could be effective against yeast and fungal strains. Like ginger, star anise is also sometimes used to calm upset stomachs.

Capsaicin, the ingredient that makes chilli peppers so hot, can lower blood sugar levels, improve heart health and boost circulation. It acts as a blood thinner, too, to help protect against strokes. Chilli peppers are also very high in vitamin C, boosting your immune system. Perhaps this could explain why we gravitate to curries when we have a cold.

Another spice favoured by practitioners of Chinese medicine, cinnamon contains large amounts of polyphenol antioxidants, protecting the body from disease. Cinnamon has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects. High in manganese, cinnamon also contains calcium and fibre. In Ayurvedic medicine, cinnamon bark oil is often used to treat digestive imbalances and…er…farting.
