In the course of everyday life, we lose about two litres of water per day simply by breathing, sweating, going to the bathroom and maintaining a healthy digestive system. But we can lose as much as two litres per hour when we exercise, depending on the nature of the activity.
A mere two per cent loss in body weight as a result of dehydration can reduce athletic performance by up to 20%. When we lose fluids, our core body temperature rises, as does our heart rate. The glycogen stored in our muscles will be used more rapidly, leading to greatly diminished energy reserves. And lactic acid levels will increase, leading to fatigue and cramping.
When we first feel thirsty, our bodies are already two per cent dehydrated. At this stage, we likely experience headaches, tiredness and a loss of focus. These problems alone inhibit our performance, and it only gets worse the more dehydrated we become.
We also lose more than just water when we sweat. Two key electrolytes are lost: mainly sodium and a small amount of chloride. To maintain adequate hydration levels when we exercise, we need to replace the fluid, sodium and chloride we’ve lost.

What is a hypotonic drink and how does it differ from an isotonic drink?
Hypotonic drinks are lighter than our blood, which allows our bodies to absorb them more rapidly into our system. They also exit the gut quickly and efficiently, absorbed by the small intestine. These benefits make hypotonic drinks the best solution for staying well-hydrated.
Unlike isotonic drinks, hypotonic drinks are not considered a source of energy. They aren’t meant to replenish the body’s glycogen, which depletes during exercise. Hypotonic drinks focus purely on hydration.
Isotonic drinks have electrolyte and carbohydrate concentrations that diminish our body’s ability to absorb liquids because they have a similar level to our blood. Isotonic drinks are good for getting a tiny bit of energy and some water into our body but not for maximal hydration.

Why Does Our mix contain amino acids?
Small amounts of amino acids have been shown to improve water and sodium absorption from the small intestine. This is a big part of why our product is so successful at hydrating athletes.
Why is our mix saltier than other drinks?
Effective fluid replacement requires sodium. Sodium serves two purposes at once:
improving plasma absorption while replacing salt lost by sweating. Recent research based on sodium levels similar to Nosht’s formula observed beneficial effects from relatively high sodium content on the body’s ability to maintain positive fluid balance; and on its ability to restore hydration levels for several hours after loss of fluids caused by exercise.
In addition, in order to be really effective, a fluid replacement drink needs much more sodium than the average sports drink contains. This results in a dilemma: if the taste is too salty, we tend to drink less – which is counter to our goal of remaining hydrated.
